//-->N Scale Modellerwww.nscale.org.auIssue 7 ~ July 2011• 12th Australian N Scale Convention report• Weather or not: ‘how to’ series• Creating cameos: adding realism to your layout• Photographing N Scale ModelsEditorialDue to extra family and/or work commitments for some of the NSM team members, the release of this issue hasbeen, unfortunately, delayed. However, the team hopes to be able to get back on track for regular releases offuture issues by rearranging publication methods.Since the last issue was released, many in the N scale community have not only been associated with theexhibitions circuit but also with the 12th National N Scale Convention which was held in Sydney. Attended bymore than 130 people, it was a successful convention with a showcase of talent and with something to learn foreverybody. There is a report in this issue. An interesting display at the Convention was one that used a ‘Free-moN’ style modular system where the basicmodules of such a system do not have to be rectangular in shape; they may be in ‘free’ form. Such a systemallows more flexibility in designing modules to be more prototypical in appearance and operation, especially forpoint to point activity. ‘Free-moN’ is in an initial stage of development in Australia. It is for the more experiencedmodeller because it uses finescale methods and DCC control. Hopefully, we will have some articles about‘Free-moN’ in Australia in future issues of NSM.It is surprising how many modellers in Australia own models of Japanese prototype trains. It is also interesting tonote the appearance of more displays at exhibitions using Japanese themes. This issue includes an article on thechallenges of modelling Japanese prototype in Australia. As always, we welcome your feedback and the submission of any articles or pictures that can be shared with therailway modelling community.Publication TeamGraham CocksTrevor MayDavid BromagePublished by N Scale Modellers AustraliaEmail ........................................... nsm@nscale.org.au______________________________Articles may not be copied or reprinted without the permissionof the respective authors. This was the third Convention to be held in Sydney, theinaugural N Convention was held in Sydney in 1989. Many delegates made useof the venue on-site accommodation. There were attendees from the ACT and allStates except Tasmania. Although no delegates from overseas registered, it wasgreat to have AJ & Zana Ireland of Digitrax who presented a clinic about Digitrax onthe Friday. Weatherwise it was good; no rain but coldish, especially for the Thirlmeretour and the spit roast dinner at Buxton, however, delegates rugged up anyway aspre-warned.The venue provided good facilities with seminar rooms close to the common room.Quite a large area was available for layout and trader displays. Competition entrieswere on display in a glass cabinet for all to see. Tea/coffee and snacks were providedduring session breaks. Hot and cold food was providedfor lunches.I arrived with my co-traveller delegate by aircraft in theearly afternoon of the Thursday. We trained it from theairport to Central station, had a quick view of RossBalderson’s Sydney Central Station on display in theconcourse area, then trained it via various versions ofsuburban commuter trains to visit a model railway shopand then to Cabramatta station followed by a 20 minutewalk to the Sunnybrook venue. Some ‘finger foods’ wereprovided Thursday evening with an opportunity to meetsome of the delegates and view some layouts and buy atsome trade stands. Most handout kits were collected by delegates on theThursday afternoon and early evening. A Convention shirtwas included in the kit satchel for those who orderedshirts (a light blue colour with the Convention logoembroidered opposite the shirt pocket). The Conventionsatchel was black with the Convention logo on one sideIssue 7 ~ July 2011by Graham Cocksand a name tag with the delegate’s name attached to a zipper. The kit comprisedof a souvenir railway ticket “Canberra to Sydney” (ie from the last Convention city tothe next Convention city) on genuine card stock, Convention mug, large Conventiondecal, Convention fridge magnet, a NSWGR SRC 4-wheel refrigerated van with theConvention logo on the sides sponsored by various members of the NSW N ScaleGroup, a 20ft container with the Convention logo on the sides sponsored by Aust-N-Rail, a couple of brass twin diesel horns from Pallas Hobbies, a bag of ballast withcompliments of Chucks Ballast Supplies, a couple of tools from Tinkering Tools, note pad with compliments of AMRA, some model railway businesses advertising/price list pamphlets, a Jaycar catalogue, a couple of tourist guides for Sydney, theConvention Folder (with the timetable, clinic and workshop notes, layouts notes, etc), and a “Digitrax” neck lanyard with clear plastic name pouch which alsoincluded a mini-timetable. Additionally, a CD of clinic presenters’ presentation notescould be pre-purchased for $10 and would be forwarded after the convention. Aspecially laminated table placemat for the Convention Dinner table was available forkeeping.Photo by Tom DowlingN Scale Modeller3Following the attendance registration period on the Friday, the formal welcome wasmade by the Convenor, Marilyn Wilcockson. She mentioned that about 130 delegateswere in attendance, introduced the members of the organising committee, high-lighted the various arrangements, such as coaches and Partner Program activities.Marilyn advised of the silent auctions and raffles of sponsor donated items to berun to help raise funds towards the seed money for the next Convention. GrahamCocks, the secretary of N Scale Modellers Australia (NSMA), informed the delegatesthat the report on the first term’s activities was included in the handout Notes andto please read before the plenary session on the Sunday when nominations andelections for the office bearers for the second term would be held. The sessions then got under way. Forums and Clinics were arranged in 5 parallelstreams with repeats arranged for most. Two of the programmed morning sessionswere cancelled, but fortunately there were volunteers to run replacements. In addition, partnerswere able to attend the Thirlmere Museum with the delegates on the Friday and takepart in the afternoon layout tour on the Sunday. Partners were pre-booked into theConvention Dinner via delegate registration. The layout display and trader areas were reasonably large, so a number of operatinglayouts were able to be displayed. Following the guided tour of the museum and returntrip train ride to Buxton, the coaches headed us off to Buxton for a spit roast dinnerat the Holdsworth Family residence. Actually, it was a bit more than just the roastdinner under a marquee, the New South Wales N Scale Group’s “Illabo” and “SouthCreek” layouts were on display. Following the dinner and sweets the coachesreturned the delegates to the venue.4Following the Saturday morning announcements, it was then in to the full day ofsessions. The guest speaker wasRay Love who spoke about the selection of the more recent NSW railway buildingsfor heritage listing and displayed examples via a data projector. The modellingcompetition results were announced and the various awards were presented. The major award, the Dane Parker Memorial Perpetual Shield, was presented bythe Convenor to Rob Carpenter. As the Dane Parker Memorial Perpetual Shieldinscription plates had all been used, a new shield was provided and paid for by theSydney N Scale Model Railway Club to carry on the award; it included an inscriptionplate with the names of the previous awardees. It was put to those present that theoriginal shield could be returned to the instigators or to Ross Balderson who hadwon it three times. Delegates agreed that it go to Ross Balderson. The competition results and awards are listed at the end of this report. The ‘luckydip’ for delegates and partners rounded the evening off.An ecumenical prayer and communion service was held early Sunday morning forthose wishing to attend. The Convenor called for nominations.
